A public measurement study of cellular signal and speed along roughly 190 miles of the Erie Canalway and Mohawk Valley trail. Volunteers contribute anonymous readings from a mobile app as they walk and ride — building an open picture of where connectivity works, and where it doesn’t.

The Montgomery County Trail Coverage Study measures how well cellular networks perform along the county’s trail system — a matter of safety, access, and economic development for the communities the corridor connects.
As participants travel the trail, a lightweight mobile app records signal strength, network type, and speed at each location, tagged only to an anonymous install identifier — never to a person or device. Readings are aggregated into a coverage map that the County and its partners use to identify gaps and guide investment.
Participation is voluntary and privacy-first: measurements carry no names, no accounts, and no hardware identifiers, and exported data is de-identified to protect contributors.
